Named for a stubborn Mandarin phrase meaning "can't be done" or "out of the question," BùXíng evolved from improvisations with performers Damon Reaves and Lydia Adler Okrent and photographers Alex Tyson and Christopher Fernando. BùXíng applies classic strategies of cinematic framing and editing to still images in a time-based montage, later paired with a found-sound conversation in Mandarin and French. Deliberately lacking subtitles, content fades to the background as form and atmosphere take center stage.

BùXíng was on view at ICA Philadelphia from January 11 through March 4, 2012.
